PYPTUG Monthly meeting November 29 2016 (Patient Record Deduplication, machine learning lightning talks)

Come join PYPTUG at out next monthly meeting (November 29th 2016) to learn more about the Python programming language, modules and tools. Python is the perfect language to learn if you've never programmed before, and at the other end, it is also the perfect tool that no expert would do without. Monthly meetings are in addition to our project nights.

What

Meeting will start at 6:00pm.

We will open on an Intro to PYPTUG and on how to get started with Python, PYPTUG activities and members projects, then on to News from the community.

Then on to the main talk. Jafaar Ben-Abdallah will talk about Patient Record de-duplication.

Main Talk: Scalable Patients Records De-Duplication using machine learning
by Jafaar Ben-Abdallah
Bio:
PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Louisville
Data Scientist at Inmar.

Abstract:
Simple matching to identify duplicates in patient records produces numerous errors for various reasons. To improve the identification of duplicates, we built an incremental model on top of an existing machine learning based Python package. We made the model updatable and scalable to accommodate an ever increasing patient record file.

Lightning talks!

We will have some time for extemporaneous "lightning talks" of 5-10 minute duration. If you'd like to do one, some suggestions of talks were provided here, if you are looking for inspiration. Or talk about a project you are working on.
Some are already lined up.

When

Tuesday, November 29th 2016
Meeting starts at 6:00PM

Where

Wake Forest University, close to Polo Rd and University Parkway:

Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC 27109

And speaking of parking:  Parking after 5pm is on a first-come, first-serve basis.  The official parking policy is:

Then on to the main talk. If you missed Rob Agle's talk at PyData Carolinas (http://pydata.org/carolinas2016/schedule/presentation/62/), here is your chance. This will be an extended version.

Main Talk: Just Bring Glue - Leveraging Multiple Libraries To Quickly Build Powerful New Tools
by Rob Agle
Bio:
Rob Agle is a software engineer at Inmar, where he works on the high-availability REST APIs powering the organization's digital promotions network. His technical interests include application and network security, machine learning and natural language processing.

Abstract:
It has never been easier for developers to create simple-yet-powerful data-driven or data-informed tools. Through case studies, we'll explore a few projects that use a number of open source libraries or modules in concert. Next, we'll cover strategies for learning these new tools. Finally, we wrap up with pitfalls to keep in mind when gluing powerful things together quickly.

Winston Salem Project Night! Autonomous vehicles (#uav), #PyData August 17th

Do you have a project you want to show off? Or do you need a second set of eyes on your code? Would you like to hack on an open source project? Perhaps you need help getting a module on a specific platform? Don't have a project but would like to help others or to learn more Python?
Whatever the case may be, project nights are your opportunity to get some help or to help others, so bring your laptop (or Raspberry Pi or whatever device that can run Python) and let's get things going.

We need some help with some work on the Quadcopter. In particular, how to send and receive Smart Bus (FrSky) data from a Raspberry Pi, hardware level conversion etc. Computer vision work needed too. And some of us will also be working on our PyData Carolinas presentations.

When

This meeting will be on Wednesday, August 17th at 6pm in the Dash room at Inmar:
